… schade, dass es nicht ganz ohne Adware geht. Und ob man Watanabe nach den Erfahrungen mit «Inquisitor» und anderen negativen Vorfällen in der Vergangenheit wirklich noch vertrauen kann?

Zum Glück nutze ich primär Mozilla Firefox und kann damit echte Erweiterungen verwenden anstatt mich auf Safari-«Hacks» verlassen zu müssen!

Nachfolgend die Stellungnahme von Watanabe – da sich Watanabe leider für «Comments Off» entschieden hat, bringe ich meine Bemerkungen an dieser Stelle an …

It’s true, Inquisitor supplements results for certain keywords with product links to Amazon.com and the Apple Store. But the thing is, this isn’t news. It’s been like this ever since Inquisitor 3 was released 16 months ago. This behavior is public knowledge, and after over a year of soak-time in the public with no complaints it should be a non-issue. So, imagine my surprise when I wake up to a mailbox containing words unfit for publication, blogs declaring me as the biggest asshole in the world, and demands that people sabotage and steal my work.

Watanabe gibt zu, dass «Inquisitor» Adware ist, schon seit 16 Monaten. Gleichzeitig behauptet er, das sei seit über einen Jahr bekannt («public knowledge»). Wieso erst seit einem Jahr und nicht von Anfang an? Und woher überhaupt konnten die Benutzer davon wissen?

Auf der «Inquisitor»-Website heisst es heute noch, das Programm sei «free», von Adware ist keine Rede, es wird sogar noch um Spenden gebeten («Donations appreciated!»).

Auf der Download-Seite für «Inquisitor» findet sich ebenfalls kein Hinweis auf Adware – es wird lediglich für andere Programme von Watanabe geworben, unter anderem für «Xtorrent», das anscheinend auf unrechtmässig genutztem Quelltext von «Transmission» beruht …

… und auch im Installationsprogramm fehlt jeder Hinweis auf die «Inquisitor»-Finanzierung durch Adware.

Generell fällt auf, dass die Informationen zu «Inquisitor» auf der Website und im Installationsprogramm äusserst knapp gehalten sind. Die Website enthält beispielsweise keinerlei Angaben zum Support und im Installationsprogramm fehlen Lizenzbestimmungen vollständig.

I’ve always been very proud of Inquisitor. It’s small, lightweight, and entirely unique at what it does. Best of all, the revenue model means that Inquisitor 3 is totally free for users. I think it’s quite clever in how it presents ads. Ads are treated like any search result, meaning that if a user clicks on a different choice, the ad will sink below the chosen result. So, if an ad isn’t what you wanted, it will drop in the rankings, ultimately sinking to the bottom. This design is deliberate.

Watanabe gibt weiter zu, dass er die Adware-Funktionalität von «Inquisitor» absichtlich («deliberate») versteckt hat und sieht darin gar noch einen Vorteil für den Benutzer. Dabei verwechselt er auch gleich noch Adware mit vollkommen kostenlos («totally free»). Kennt Watanabe den TINSTAFFL-Grundsatz etwa nicht?

It gives the user an element of control, and is a nice compromise between the necessity of ads and the need for users to control their experience. That said, Inquisitor’s ads are hardly pervasive. They appear only for a small handful of keywords, so sparsely chosen that the average user will never see one. Revenue-wise they are marginal, but every little bit helps.

Benutzerkontrolle über eine Adware-Funktionalität, die als solche nur mit viel Aufwand zu erkennen ist?

Now, I guess people have forgotten that Inquisitor 2 was a shareware product. The release of Inquisitor 3 as ad-supported freeware was a massive risk. I doubt many shareware authors would take a successful revenue-generating product and make it freeware on a whim. However, at the time I was feeling idealistic. I genuinely felt that Inquisitor was a great experience that everyone ought to be able to enjoy, and that it made the world (a small bit) better. So, with good intentions I made the switch to freeware. The inclusion of very limited advertising was a necessary evil, to dampen the financial disaster of the switch.

Versteckte Adware, also eigentlich Spyware, als Idealismus? Idealismus wäre die Veröffentlichung von «Inquisitor» als freie Open Source-Software (FOSS) … und ja, viele erinnern sich, dass «Inquisitor» früher als Shareware vertrieben wurde, und hätten es weiterhin gerne so. Im Übrigen verwechselt Watanabe weiterhin Adware mit Freeware.

Ultimately, designing great software isn’t easy, especially when it’s being done as a hobby. I have few resources and since expectations are unbounded, it’s a certainty that I will always fall short. That’s not evil, malice, or incompetence – it’s just meathook reality. Nonetheless, I grit my teeth and try my best. But increasingly my good intentions and sacrifice are being met with cynicism and deliberate mean-spiritedness. Fundamentally I’m a nice person, quiet spoken and non-confrontational. Sacrificing six years of my life to enhance the lives of people whom I will never meet is not a self-serving action. But when I get threatened with harm and called an asshole by someone I have never met, when my ‘transgression’ was creating something unique and giving it away for free to everyone… well, my idealism about the Mac dies a little. If this is you, then I welcome you to leave. Your burden is not one I wish to bear.

Kommen noch anderen gleich die Tränen?

Erbärmlich, aber nicht einzigartig, Spammer beispielsweise argumentieren jeweils ähnlich, dito andere «Sünder», sie meinen es ja immer gut mit ihren Opfern …

Mit seiner Stellungnahme hat Watanabe mein bestehendes Fazit noch bestärkt: Finger weg von Software, die von Watanabe stammt – es sei denn, man mag Adware und möchte einen dubiosen Mac-Entwickler mit unseriösen Geschäftspraktiken unterstützen …

Nachtrag vom 13. Januar 2008: Inzwischen ist die Stellungnahme von David Watanabe nicht mehr online. Ähnliche Probleme konnte Watanabe in der Vergangenheit mit Erfolg aussitzen.

… die Suchergebnisse von «Inquisitor» werden manipuliert, so dass in den Ergebnissen bevorzugt die Onlineshops von Amazon, Apple und allenfalls noch weiteren Anbietern erscheinen – kauft ein Benutzer aufgrund einer «Inquisitor»-Suche zum Beispiel bei Amazon ein, erhält Watanabe über das entsprechende Partnerprogramm als «Affiliate» eine Umsatzbeteiligung. Leider hat Watanabe «versäumt», dieses Verhalten transparent zu kommunizieren. Im Gegenteil, «Inquisitor» stellt die entsprechenden Internet-Adressen (URLs) so dar, dass sie als gewöhnliche Weblinks zu Amazon, usw. erscheinen …

Fazit 1: Finger weg von «Inquisitor», es sei denn, man mag Adware!

Fazit 2: Wann endlich gönnt Apple Safari einen Erweiterungskosmos im Stil von Mozilla Firefox? Für Mozilla Firefox sind nicht nur echte Erweiterungen anstelle von kruden Hacks möglich, sondern sie sind üblicherweise auch frei und kostenlos erhältlich…

Fazit 3: Wieso auch noch Finger weg von «Acquisition», «NewsFire» und «Xtorrent»??

«Xtorrent» ist ein BitTorrent-Programm, das ebenfalls von Watanabe stammt. Nach den Erfahrungen mit «Inquisitor» muss man für «Xtorrent» das Schlimmste befürchten. Hinzu kommt noch, dass «Xtorrent» anscheinend weitgehend auf dem freien BitTorrent-Programm «Transmission» basiert – da nutzt man besser gleich das Original!

Ähnliches gilt für «Acquisition» und «NewsFire» – beide Programme stammen ebenfalls von Watanabe …
